Getting Started
It isn’t easy to get into the arena of running your own business when you have never been there before.
Likewise, becoming a business owner can be too intimidating without direction and support. As a business owner, you will come across many successes and failures.
Shiny Object Syndrome
One of the most prominent enemies to your success as a business owner is the “Shiny Object Syndrome“.
Think about it for a second: You, as an entrepreneur, are presumably very imaginative, intuitive, and confident by nature.
In the same breath, it’s likely common for you to have a mind full of new ideas at any given moment.
“I have had to set boundaries with myself as I grew as a creator. In the beginning, I wanted to do everything. I had the skills and the confidence. I just ended up doing nothing at all”Â
Creatives see opportunities where many others don’t, and the trouble arises when you want to bring all of the ideas to life simultaneously.
We’re conditioned to an extent to be attracted to what is “new” and “exciting.” If you are always jumping between ideas, it will be almost impossible to finish anything.
Therefore, we have a challenge for entrepreneurs who have a sprinkle of shiny object syndrome: learn to pick one idea and focus on building that.
“I would think, I can spend an hour or two on several things. I can split my budget between two or three interests. How successful would I be if I put all my time and finances towards that one thing?”Â
Finding Focus
Stop for a moment. Ask yourself these questions:
- Of all the ideas I have in my head right now, which one has the potential to make me the most money?
- Which is practical? Most realistic?
- Who would my competitors be?
Overall, once you have answered those basic questions, the idea you thought of is the one to focus on entirely.
There isn’t an easy route to success; neither is there the fastest route. Consistency is one of the most significant elements of being a business owner.
As you progress, we suggest creating and saving a list of “great ideas” you have come across. When the time is right, and you’ve done all you can with one venture, you have somewhere to look.Â
It’s simple and straightforward in this way, with your best idea forward, implement a structured plan and follow through.
All of those exciting opportunities that come up are useless and ineffective without consistency and adequate time.
Develop a business plan and seek out additional resources to help you grow.
Keep in mind distractions will surround you throughout the process. Setting boundaries for yourself and others is imperative.
When presented with good opportunities, learn to modify and say “no” or “not at this moment” to take away your goal.
It’s often problematic for entrepreneurs to say ‘no,’ but simultaneously chasing ideas will only put you further behind.
So, another question for you: where do you start today?
Here’s a summary to help you along the way:
- Make a list of all the ideas and opportunities on your ‘to do’ list right now.
- Pick the one that will make you the most money and develop a manageable plan to complete it.
- When distractions arise, ask yourself, “Will this bring me closer to my goal or take me further away from it?”
- If they take you away from your primary goal, learn to say ‘no.’
